Why is Krishna Janmashtami celebrated?

Krishna Janmashtami 2021 also known as Janmashtami and Gokul Ashtami is one of the major Hindu festivals in India on this day we celebrate the birthday of Shri Krishna, on this day Lord Vishnu took the avatar of Shri Krishna in order to kill Kansa the evil. Kansa was the cousin brother of Shri Krishna’s biological mother Devaki.

Kansa wanted to kill his cousin sister’s child as it was predicted that the 8th son of Devaki will kill Kansa so to save his own life he imprisoned his cousin sister and his brother in law king Nanda in his kingdom Mathura, Devaki gave birth to 8 children in 8 years in Kansa prison and Kansa killed all 7 new-born children of Devaki but he was failed to kill the 8th child who was Shri Krishna, as Shri Krishna's father Vasudev shifted him to his friend King Nanda’s house in Vrindavan where he was brought up by king Nanda and queen Janaki. Later on, Shree Krishna killed Kansa and fulfilled the purpose of his birth.

Krishna Janmashtami 2021 will be celebrated on Ashtami of Krishna paksha in the month of Bhadrapada which is on 30th august 2021. Krishna Janmashtami usually celebrates two days and this year Krishna Janmashtami 2021 will be celebrated on 30th august and 31st august.

On this Janmashtami 2021, there are three mahurats on which you can take Janmashtami vrat: -
  1. If you take Janmashtami vrat after suryodaya on the next day then you can take Janmashtami vrat 2021 on 31st August at 05:59 AM.
  2. If you take Janmashtami vrat after nishita puja then you can take Janmashtami vrat 2021 on 31st August at 12:44 AM.
  3. If you take Janmashtami vrat after Rohini nakshatra and Ashtami tithi then you can take Janmashtami vrat 2021 on 31st August at 09:44 AM.
Janmashtami puja samagri:

For Krishna Janmashtami puja you will require some Janmashrami puja samagri such as:

  1. One Chawki
  2. Red cloth for chowki
  3. Photo or murti of Balkrishna.
  4. One asana.
  5. Panchamrit
  6. Gangajal
  7. Earthen lamp(Deepak/Diya), Ghee, wick(batti)
  8. Dhoop batti
  9. Sandal powder(chandan) or roli
  10. Raw Rice (Sabut chawal)
  11. Basil(tulsi), white butter(Makhan) and mishree
  12. Ornaments, cloths for Shree Krishna
  13. Perfume(Itra)
  14. Flowers (Phool mala)
After arranging all above given Janmashtami puja samagri list you need to follow the below-given steps for Janmashtami puja vidhi:

Step1: - Spread a red cloth on chowki.
Step2: - Put Balkrishna murti on a clean steal or Kansa plate on chowki.
Step3: - Light the earthen lamp (Deepak) and dhoop batti.
Step4: - Prey to lord Krishna that please come and receive your prayer.
Step5: - Give Balkrishna murth the panchamrit bath.
Step6: - Then give gangajal bath to Balkrishna.
Step7: - Clean the Balkrishna with a clean towel and put clothes and ornaments on Balkrishna.
Step8: - Put Balkrishna on asana.
Step9: - Give earthen lamp (Deepak) and dhoop batti to Balkrishna.
Step10: - Put sandal powder or roli tilak and raw rice on Balkrishna's forehead.
Step11: - Offer Makhan mishri, Basil (tulsi), and gangajal (in a glass) to Balkrishna.
Step12: - Offer perfume (itra), flower to Balkrishna.
Now close your eyes and imagine Balkrishna and chant (Jaap) of his name.

How to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami 2021 at home:

Due to the covid19 pandemic, you will not be able to go to any temple but you can celebrate this Krishna Janmashtami 2021 at your home, to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami 2021 with joy, you can make some preparations which are: -

  • Buy a small murti or photo of Balkrishna.
  • Buy a  small cradle (paalana) and decorate it with flowers
  • Buy some decoration stuff like balloons, decoration lights and other party stuff which usually use for decoration of any kid’s birthday.
  • If you have a kid in your house you can buy a Krishna dress for him to make him Kanha on Janmashtami.
